Backgrounds - painted

Here's some painted BGs I have done, I'm half way through the pile, but for now I'm trying to concentrate on the animation. I need to adjust the colours and I may add some textures/patterns near the end of production!

My long awaited animatic, will be updating it soon with some actual animation pencil tests. If you're going to suggest something, then keep in mind that I can't change much other than maybe some of the order, some angles or shots etc.

My final aesthetic mock up of what I'd like to achieve in my film. The BG is not to what I want, but hopefully with more practise I can get the look I want, which probably be won't be too much different. I wanted to colour the girl (this is the Tanuki disguised as the girl, I intend its colours to be more paler than the actual girl, and that goes with all the animals it turns into, plus there will be added white highlights to the swirls on each animal) in a rough painted way. I think the colour of the kimono is okay, I had to go through different variations to get it right, I might change my mind later, but it may just stay like that.

This is a concept/layout of a BG. I'll be colouring it in watercolours roughly. I may decided to redo it if I have the time, because my later BGs have a lighter and more sketchy look that I wanted originally.

I'm not going to post alllll the characters up as that will waste precious time I have to complete my BGs and everything else! So here's the girl and the rabbit, just to give you some idea of how the characters will look. I tried to keep them as simple as I could so it'll be easier to animate. I'll be colouring them in photoshop, in brush stroke kind of fashion....

Life drawing...

I went to the 2nd years life drawing class and I'm glad I did because we used ink and rolled up card to use like a pen and drew good old Isabelle! I then realized this is what I want for my BGs: a rough, brush stroke kind of style. We then used dip pens which were hard but interesting to use, I may not use a dip pen for my work but I might use a small paint brush to get the brush stroke look for my actually animation. That means using indian ink...

Character designs

I've been practising drawing my characters, as well as designing them...

This pic was done with a black copic pen (brush nib) to see if I could emulate a ink brush look, but I wanted the ink to be more like paint, as in have more of a brush stroke effect.

This was done with watercolours. Along the lines of what I wanted, although I need more practise to get smoother lines. I might also make the characters simpler so it's easier to paint the lines, I still keep painting like I'm sketching!

These are some drawings of my character turnarounds, I'll probably develop these into a more stylistic rendition, so they're easier to paint. I also need to draw out the lion and bird, and wolf!

I've done some basic sketches of the girl, although I'm still not happy with the outsome so I'm working on her.

Hopefully I'll be moving onto painting some BGs, when I get hold of my watercolours!
